Air Tech Solutions

House builders need to be provided with air tightness tests and reports in order to comply with part L1a of Building Regulations (2006 edition). Air Tech Solutions was set up in order to provide these services. The business has been established by partners with a great deal of experience in both management and on the ground in the construction sector. They aim to provide a proficient service.

The British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) administrates any air tightness building projects taken on by Air Tech Solutions through a third party approved scheme. Technical expertise and management is provided by the Air Tightness Testing and Measurement Association (ATTMC). This body reports to the Council of the Institute.

What is an air tightness test?

The key to a pressurisation test is ascertaining how high the air flow rate is in order to maintain a 50 pascal (Pa) excess air pressure. This is done by first sealing off all of the chimneys and similar apertures before setting up a fan in the main entrance way of the dwelling. BS EN 13929 is the standard by which pressurisation tests of this kind are carried out. The measurements through which the permeability of the air is ascertained is in this way: Cubic metres per hour per square metre of envelope area at 50 pascals (m3/(h.m2) at 50 Pa).

The envelope area is simply that area that is enveloped – the walls, ceilings and floors that constitute the surrounds of the test area.
Temperature, external wind and humidity are some of the measurements that are taken – on instruments that are calibrated before testing, and annually thereafter. Bespoke software is then used to analyse the data and draw up the reports.
